The stories of Chinese immigrants and Chinese Canadians, especially of their roles in Canada’s food system, have gone largely undocumented. This history includes survival of Chinese migrants under racist policies that prevented them from acquiring farmland, and racist attitudes that still persist today. Examining these histories, especially the resilience of Chinese Canadian farmers and farmworkers to carve out spaces of their own, are important today in a climate of rising anti-immigrant and anti-Chinese racism.

Farming is a forty-century tradition in Chinese culture. Chinese immigrant farmers bring with them generations of wisdom about working with nature, including the philosophy of “food as medicine” (药食同源) and the belief that “land and people are one” (身土不二). These traditions not only guide sustainable farming practices but also shape resilience in the face of systemic barriers. The ability to adapt, persevere, and thrive is deeply rooted in these cultural principles, making the contributions of Chinese Canadian farmers an essential yet often overlooked part of Canada’s agricultural history.

Join the National Farmers Union (NFU) and Chinese Canadian Agricultural Development Council (CCADC) on Thursday March 6th at 4 pm PT / 5 pm MT / 6 pm CT / 7 pm ET / 8pm AT for a virtual screening of Yung Chang’s Earth to Mouth. Filmed at the Wing Fong Farm in Ontario, Earth to Mouth follows the tilling, planting and harvesting of Asian vegetables destined for Chinese markets and restaurants. On 80 acres of land, Lau King-Fai, her son and a half-dozen migrant Mexican workers care for the plants. For Yeung Kwan, her son, the farm represents personal and financial independence. For his mother, it is an oasis of peace. For the Mexican workers, it provides jobs that help support their children back home.

Following the screening will be a panel discussion and Q&A featuring:

  • Yung Chang, the film’s award-winning director,
  • Jingshu Yao, PhD student, University of Toronto Faculty of Information
  • David Fu, President of CCADC, and
  • Sun Shan, NFU and CCADC board member

Mandarin translation will be available at this event.
