Talking to journalists can feel confusing and intimidating. This workshop will empower NFU members with the skills you need to give media interviews that shine. From sharing personal stories to commenting on government policy, you’ll learn to speak confidently about your farm and the future of sustainable agriculture. In this workshop you’ll learn: how to craft key messages; how to tell compelling stories about yourself and your work; how to handle difficult, hostile, and off-topic interview questions; your rights as an interviewee.

Facilitator

Saima Desai has been a journalist and editor for over seven years. She cut her teeth as an editor at a student paper (the McGill Daily), worked for mainstream publications (Chatelaine), and has written for alternative media (Maisonneuve, THIS Magazine, the Tyee). From 2018 to 2022 she was the editor of Briarpatch Magazine, a national magazine of grassroots politics and social movements. During her time at Briarpatch she co-founded the Sask Dispatch, an independent publication focussing on Saskatchewan news, and created Briarpatch’s Land Back issue, which won gold for Issue Grand Prix at the 2021 National Magazine Awards. She was also a finalist for Editor Grand Prix in 2023. She was recently an advisor on the Truth in Journalism project, a journalist-led initiative focused on the nature and methodology of fact-based journalism. She’s been leading media workshops for five years.
