NFU reaffirms commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion

The National Farmers Union (NFU) stands for dignity and respect for all— farmers, farm workers, and non-farmers alike. We condemn the retreat from Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policies by the US government and several large corporations. We see this attack on EDI for what it is— a shameful attempt to exclude, harm, and divide people in order to undermine our solidarity and weaken our ability to confront the billionaires and corporations that are bent on destroying our capacity to address the multiple crises that threaten our society and planet.

Canada’s diversity is our biggest strength, and is enshrined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms by prohibiting discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex, age, and mental or physical disability.

The National Farmers Union strongly supports diversity, equity and inclusion. We applaud companies and institutions that continue to uphold their EDI policies as a way to provide a measure of redress for Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, women, LGBTQ2+ and gender diverse people, and people with disabilities who face barriers caused by historical and structural inequality. By embracing EDI we honor and promote the humanity, capacity, and contributions of every member of our society.
