Welcome to Region 1 District 3, the beautiful Province of Nova Scotia! We are an engaged, active group of farmers, farm workers and non-farming members from across the province. We’re growing! Membership in R1D3 has been growing slowly and steadily over the past few years, in large part due to enthusiasm from young, new and diversified farmers and farm workers. We’ve been having fun getting to know one another and forging a path for the NFU to be more present in Nova Scotia. We’d love for you to join us in dreaming up a food system that aligns with the principles of food sovereignty!
Region 1 is uniquely positioned to represent the Atlantic Provinces. Districts represent individual provinces whereas the region comprises all of the Atlantic provinces. While the districts have our own issues, agriculture in Atlantic Canada faces unique challenges and opportunities, so we are grateful to work together on addressing them.
Rebecca MacInnis, NFU member and organic farmer, is currently working with us as a district organizer. Email her to get connected to NS farmers and campaigns: macinnis@nfu.ca
Land Access Committee
Our local land access committee meets monthly to discuss the land access landscape in Nova Scotia. The housing crisis, basic income, resources for land sharing, dreams of public agricultural land trusts and succession planning are all topics of interest in the group. All are welcome to participate!
Agroecology Exchanges
Based on the model of the agroecology training schools run by La Via Campesina, these half-day exchanges will “unite knowledge production, with practice, community engagement and political formation, to preserve subaltern ways of knowing and doing agriculture” (LVC, 2017) . Each exchange will be hosted and facilitated by a farmer or farm worker and guided by their unique interests and perspectives. These exchanges will be framed politically and provide space for discussions above and beyond farm practices – from revitalizing farming communities to building social power as an organization.
Past exchanges have covered topics ranging from seed saving to international solidarity to business planning. We’re working hard to ensure a deeper understanding of agroecology as a practice, a science, and a movement. We’re building a better food system together and celebrating the incredible hard work of farmers along the way!
