Election Action: Call for Canadian Food Sovereignty in Response to President Trump’s Tariffs
Canadian voters will elect a new federal government on April 28. The top ballot box issue is how Canada will deal with all the uncertainty due to US President Trump’s tariffs and threats to Canadian sovereignty. These changes in Canada-US relations affect all Canadians, and have impacts on both food prices and producer prices.
The NFU is calling on the federal governments to build resiliency and food sovereignty to put Canada into a better position to deal with food supply and agricultural production challenges caused by President Trump’s tariff actions.
Canadians must have secure access to the food we need by developing our capacity here at home. Farmers must be confident that their operations will be protected from economic uncertainty. President Trump’s disruptive strategy and lack of respect for rules means we can no longer consider trade agreements reliable.
By calling for food sovereignty for Canadians we are talking about building community power to support a food system that works for people and the planet. Canadian institutions must provide stability and security to Canadian producers and consumers.
During the federal election add your personal voice to this call by sending a letter to each of the federal party leaders:
- Prime Minister Mark Carney, Leader of the Liberal Party: pm@pm.gc.ca
- Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Opposition: pierre.poilievre@parl.gc.ca
- Yves-François Blanchet, Leader of the Bloc Québécois: Yves-Francois.Blanchet@parl.gc.ca
- Jagmeet Singh, Leader of the NDP: Jagmeet.Singh@parl.gc.ca
- Elizabeth May, Co-Leader of the Green Party: elizabeth.may@parl.gc.ca
Call on them to promote and build our domestic food system (including supply management) and to promote good agricultural jobs that protect and support farm workers.
